Joan Moncrieffe

Established artist Joan Moncrieffe (formerly Prowse) was born in Leamington Spa in 1966.  She graduated inThree dimensional design from Plymouth University in 1991 and went to live and work in Brittany, France for a number of years before returning to Devon, UK. The last 30 years she has been based in the seaside resort of Exmouth where she has developed her skills in the pioneering technique of needlefelting artwork mixing 2D/3D to produce her unique textile and mixed media work.

Using a mixture of fleece fibres and mixed media she creates ‘felted 3D sculptures and 2D/3D textile canvases, specialising in large works.

"The method of construction is all by hand needlefelting (stabbing fibres with a barbed needle to felt them together). The fibres used are alpaca, merino, angora rabbit, and corriedale with a ryeland core. I process as many of the fibres as I can myself and source them locally wherever possible".

Joan's commitment to her Christian faith, role as worship leader, singer-song writer and Christian communicator, has a strong influence on her pieces. She draws from the beauty and deeper meaning of the creation around her, and enjoys oppotunities to combine her gifts to communicate and touch people beyond the words, images or music she produces. By combining her gifts, she has developed a unique coupling of traditional craft within a fine art application to express deep meaning and beauty within her works. She is regarded as a leading Masterfelter, and periodically offers talks, masterclasses and group workshops around the country. Joan's work is exhibited in galleries in the UK and Ireland and in private collections worldwide.

Care and cleaning:

It is recommended that these are ideally put behind museum glass for ultimate longevity. However they can remain unframed, and gently cleaned by using a very fine gauze on the end of a vacuum cleaner held 50mm away from the surface periodically to remove dust. Each piece has been supplied with a lavendar bag (moth deterrent) and treated with lavender oil in the base construction layers, but may also benefit longterm from a pheromone moth trap if left unframed. As with any artwork, keep out of direct sunlight, and away from extreme heat for a lifetime of continuous enjoyment.
