THIS TOO WILL PASS - Shortlisted portrait for the Hennessy Portrait Prize, Dublin (2016) and awarded the People's Choice Award at the Royal Ulster Academy's 136th Annual Exhibition (2017). ‘This too will pass’ is a portrait of my late father. Painted after his death this piece was a tribute to him. I wanted to capture not only the likeness as faithfully as I could but also the spirit in the painting. Creating portraits that capture life is essential to me and I use delicate brush strokes to achieve this effect. Expression and its subtlety in conveying the inner world of the sitter is integral to my portrait practice. I capture and subtly alter expressions in my pieces to give the viewer the opportunity to add their own interpretation on to the character and inner world of the subject. I believe the best portraiture is honest and doesn't edit out flaws or perceived imperfections. The passage of time and inevitable mortality is etched on the face of my father. His deep expression lines showing the journey of his life. The title of the painting ‘This too will pass’ is open to interpretation, it can express his and our own mortality but also offers a suggestion of what is on the mind of my father and struggles to overcome.
