  • This piece has a personal significance over and above the others in the show. The location of this painting is castle island also known as Ballintogher in strangford lough. My family have a long history on the shores of the lough having built and occupied a series of castles / tower houses along the shores, one of which was lived in by my line of the family until the mid 18th century. Castle island is no longer an island thanks to the Quoile barrage further up river but at the place depicted in this piece there was a tower house which was besieged during the ulster rebellion and where one of my ancestors was captured and killed. It wasn't just the historic significance that drew me to paint it but the extreme tranquility and calm of strangford lough which rises so gently like a warm bath being filled leaving this incredibly soft experience so contrary to the violence of its past.
