  • Like so many of us, I followed the daily increasing numbers of people falling ill from corona virus covid-19 all over the world once the crisis had become apparent. It also struck me how the official talk was concerned with “numbers” and “cases”, neglecting the personal tragedy behind every person being affected. On 5th June 2020, the Irish government announced the gradual reopening of society and business after a prolonged period of lock-down. This is the day I chose for this piece, quoting the day’s statistics on the page underneath the tracing paper with its flurry of butterflies. In Irish folklore, butterflies represent the souls of the deceased. Here they also stand for the joyful release from confinement.
