  • The trip to the Blasket Islands was a 'must' for the project as it has such a prominent place in the psyche of the Irish nation, it's celebrated writers having documented the harsh realities of life there. It was far from easy to find a window when the weather and my schedule coincided so I was really fortunate that the sun also shone for the time I was out on the Island. A bit of serendipity meant that I was staying in the writer Peig Sayer's own house on the Island that was built for her by the corporation after her original cottage was deemed uninhabitable and my enduring memory is of looking out at Trá Bán through the half door of the house and seeing a group of very noisy mother and pup seals on the beach which numbered 500 when I arrived and I was told by the wardens numbered 2000 by the time I left. What isn't clear from the painting I did on the beach is the noise and activity that was going on just to the left of the scene. What caught my eye about this particular view was the composition and abstract shapes that just seemed to fit together perfectly.
