The Doorway Gallery is delighted to host an exhibition by Dave West, entitled, Diamonds and Rust
On Thursday, April 4thbetween 6-7.30pm on 24 South Frederick Street.
“The title of this show, borrowed from an old song by Joan Baez stuck in my mind as it encapsulated some of my themes and ideas running through my own work: aspects of beauty, nostalgia, memory and decay.
Much of my recent work is executed ‘en Plein-air’ meaning that I paint directly from the subject (in all weathers!) It’s a process very much concerned with capturing mood - not just about a certain place but the interaction between the space, the artist, and the atmosphere.
My subjects range from a long-abandoned pier on a windy grey October morning or exploring the relationship between the beautiful pink streetlights of early dusk and a dilapidated urban scene.
The still life paintings feature a variety of objects, some have a very personal story behind them and others are found objects with stories of their own to tell. A typical still-life arrangements could be an arrangement of small jewel like
pieces of beach glass, some of them recently smashed against the rocks after a raucous late night beach party or a vivid piece of Bristol blue glass churning around in the ocean for decades. I add a further layer and narrative to their ‘stories’ by arranging them into compositions and painting them.” Dave West
