  • ust in the channel at Portmagee stands tiny Illauloughan, a medieval monastery linked to the Skelligs and site of a Cilin. I passed by it on three sides from the mainland, on my way out the Skelligs and on Valencia Island but without a boat to get out it remained totally inaccessible. It is a place that the local people considered sacred as was the case with so many of these small islands and used it to bury their unbaptised children. In a way I was glad that I couldn't get any closer as it would have seemed a little disrespectful to clamber all over it. I think that the idea was much better realised in the painting that eventually materialised of the view out to the island from the mainland.
This sentiment was further realised by using a really close colour range of dusky blues to illustrate the sombre mood of nightfall.
