Irish Artist, Ken Browne returns to The Doorway Gallery, after is sell out show in 2014. He comes back with a new collection of paintings entitled, “A Sense of Place”.
Browne continues to paint the Irish Landscape as he sees it, and how he remembers it from trips he made around Ireland throughout the year. His technique requires neither photography, nor sketching. Browne’s visions are all recalled from both memories and emotion, with a sense of place when returning to his studio.
“Through my work I try to create a sense of place without a specific location in mind. A process of layering, invokes the elements of land, sea and sky. Derived from memory and emotions, I am bringing them back together in my paintings, holding on to the chance accidents and spontaneous marks, which are integral to my technique. Without losing the overall compositional intention, I balance between habitual mark making and recognising happy accidents when they occur.’
This process of layering is not only physical – there is a darker edge to my paintings, a deeper meaning that lurks in the shadows. They are not only abstract landscapes but “inscapes”, bringing the outside and inside world together, merging places with emotions. The true definition of my art, is about enabling people to follow me on my emotional journey, while simultaneously enjoying their own experience.” Ken Browne
“In these highly evocative works, landscape becomes the vehicle through which the artist explores the realms of human emotion and the subconscious.” Donal O’ Sullivan, Exhibitions & Residences
“Shares an honesty about paintings..layers of memories… Sophie Gorman, Irish Independent
“A sense of sculpture and its corresponding tactility has always been present in the physicality of Browne’s process. Those gestures of layering, scraping, scratching and polishing are still evident” Sue Rainsford
" Highly evocative works..." Sunday Mail
"...swirls of memory permeating the layers of earthy soil lapped by the still pools of murky sea under a blanket of Irish mist in this painting." Irish Independent - weekend review 11/10/2014
“Incredible stuff, emotional connection in all the pieces. Creates an individual sense of place almost immediately.” Gordon Darcy, retired Irish rugby player
“His sweeping, yet intimate landscapes, make Ken Browne a Turner for the 21st century.” Myles Dungan (RTE)
