I've been fascinated by harbour piers since I began my painting career some 20 years ago. I love the sense of history and forgotten stories belonging to them but also that here is a place where the natural forces of beach and ocean hit up against the man-made environment. This old pier on Clare has to be the smallest, most squat shaped pier I have ever come across but it made a beautiful composition within this scene.
