    Pete Monaghan - Passed Places

‘Passed Places’ An exhibition of new paintings by Pete Monaghan September 5th – 22nd The Doorway Gallery, 24 South Frederick St, Dublin 2. The Doorway Gallery is delighted to host an exhibition by Peter Monaghan, entitled, Passed Places, on Thursday, September 5th between 6-7.30pm on 24 South Frederick Street. Pete Monaghan is a European artist. He worked in Germany for 25 years, grew up in the UK with one formative year in the Meath Gaeltacht. His Father was from Kells, Co. Meath, his Mother is English with Welsh and Irish heritage and his wife is German. He now works from a studio in Aberystwyth, West Wales. He is drawn to industrial and vernacular architecture of Ireland, Scotland and Wales that he paints in his unique style encompassing over 30 years of daily drawing. He uses a continuous line technique whilst sketching on-site trying to capture the energy and excitement he feels. Transferring that energy into larger scale paintings Pete applies paint freely, he splashes and dribbles paint allowing it to pool or shaping it. He uses acrylic and crayon on wood panel and adds collage in the form of takeaway coffee cups and maps to resolve an image with a down-to-earth honesty. The renowned welsh art critic Peter Wakelin describes it as "all rusty tin and telegraph poles". In this, Pete's first solo show at the Doorway Gallery he is keen to show, along with his strongest body of paintings, his sketchbooks which give an insight into the working process. Pete Monaghan holds an MA from Aberystwyth University, he won the painting prize at MoMA Machynlleth in 2012 and his work is in public collections including the National Library of Wales as well as private collections worldwide.
